Fly and light tackle fishing for trout and bass
About Slate Drake Guide Service

Having fished the local waters of Northeastern Pennsylvania for many years, I have caught many nice trout, bass, walleye, muskie, and northern pike in those waters.  The Susquehanna River holds all of these fish and many of them get very large!  Fishing Creek, in Columbia County, has many large trout, but you have to hunt for them.  They are not always active, but when you find them and they are feeding, you are in for a good day.

I like fishing the slate drake hatch.  I have had my best luck between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM during the hatch.  I caught my first 20"+ brown trout on a slate drake dry fly and have caught many more 20"+ browns since then.  That is why I chose the name of "Slate Drake Guide Service." .  It is my favorite hatch, and you will find me on Fishing Creek during the late mornings and afternoons when the slate drakes are active.

In 2007 a friend introduced me to The Federation of Fly Fishers and their program for certified casting instructors.  So I gathered more information on the casting instructor program, studied all the materials, and practiced the required casts for the casting instructor test.  In 2008 I  passed the tests and relaxed.  Then my friend asked if I was going to try for the Master Casting Instructor Program.  Well I looked into what was involved with the program and decided to try.  In 2010, after two years of casting practice and reading many books on just about everything involved with fly fishing, I took and passed the Master's test.  Now I am still reading fly fishing books and gathering information on different types of fly fishing.  I am  learning everything about teaching fly casting and fishing that I can.  I go to FFF conclaves and attend continuing education seminars, along with teaching and testing future instructors and master instructors.  I am actually enjoying the work and satisfaction of helping others work their way through the process, as well as teaching people of all ages to learn to cast and fly fish.  It has been a hard journey, but well worth it.  If you think you would like to try for your instructors certification, give me a call, and I will be happy to help.  I can give you lessons on casting and what to expect from examiners, or maybe I could become your mentor if you have the drive I think is necessary to succeed.

While studying for my master's test, I attended Wulff School of Fly Casting and Wulff Casting Instructor's School and I use many of the teaching methods that I learned while attending the Wulff Schools.

I give casting demonstration at shops or outdoor shows and I can run casting clinics for fly shops and outdoor stores to help their clients improve their casting.  I can also help set customers up with proper fly fishing outfits that match their casting styles.

Our goal

Our goal is to provide you with an enjoyable day on the water.  If you need some casting instruction, we will help; if you need to learn some different or new knots, we will teach you;  or if there are some questions that you have, we will answer them or find out the answer and get the information to you.
